Girls Ride Day!

girlsrideday

The Projects opened its gates Saturday and let the ladies take free System 2.0 pulls all day! Good music, free hot dogs, the Nike 6.0 park, and a picnic table full of girls ready to ride…what more could you ask for? Maybe a little more heat from the sun. It was a little on the chilly side Saturday but that didn’t stop us from having a good time.

Two of the cables ran for most of the day, and a few girls were introduced to the System 2.0 for the first time. Among the highlights, the best trick on the box won Cassandra Scott a brand new Nike 6.0 backpack for a shuv-on, shuv-off the box. Impressive. There was also a pair of Nike 6.0’s up for grabs, several Pro-Tec helmets, Skull Candy headphones, and a few pairs of Integrity lipsticks. Rockstar brought the energy to keep us going all day, even in the cold. Everyone walked away with a little something. It was great to watch the progression as all of the girls pushed each other. Thanks to everyone who came to hang out & ride!

Big thanks to The Projects, Nike 6.0, Pro-Tec, Skull Candy, Integrity, and Rockstar for making this event happen. Look out for more Girls Ride Day’s in the future…

“Women in Action Sports” – Food for thought

Female Wakeboarders at Canadian Nationals

Its november in Canada. BLA that basically means there really isn’t much to do other than twiddle your thumbs at work, day dream about glass, think about something interesting you could make for diner and get overly excited about the new memory foam you just put on your bed. HA lets just say for a wakeboarder, you tend to have a little to much time on your hands during these dreary months. That being said, I googled “women in action sports” today and actually came up with some cool articles on how women have not only evolved in action sports over the years, but how beneficial they have proven to be on your outlook on life as a whole. For those of you who are as bored as me right now, or for those of you in need of some refreshing reading material check out theses articles. They just  might start you thinking.

TID Clinic Stop – Fresh Wakes in Windsor

TID Girls Clinic 3

Throwitdown.ca invaded Windsor and teamed up with Dave at Fresh Wakes to hold out third clinic stop. Fresh Wakes runs their wakeboard school on the Detroit river, which was one of the coolest places ever to have a clinic. The water is crystal blue, and there are islands all over the place which makes for some sweet secret shred spots. Lets just say we had calm water for the full three days!! The girls had a blast and all learned something new. A special thanks to Dave Oulette for letting us take over their school and showing the girls a great time. Check out the photos! (more…)

TID Clinic, Stoney Lake

TID_girls_clinic_Stoney_Lake_25

On July 13th and 14th throwitdown.ca clinics visited a new wake school on Stoney Lake in the Kawarthas called Great Life wakeboard school. This is one of the coolest schools that we’ve had a chance to work with all summer, they run lessons out of a beautiful mastercraft maristar from Buckeye Marine, demo Liquid Force equipment and have some seriously fun rails built in their slider bay. They have a wall ride, stair gap, an incline, rooftop and a C rail. They’ve really put a lot of work into this camp! We met up with super-awesome Great Life wakeboard coach Jenny Kastner and the girls  for a day on the boat where we had a variety of different wake sports and skill levels to teach! We had girls just getting up for the first time on a wakeboard, to learning their first heelside wake 2 wake 180s, to wakeskaters and wakesurfers!  Everyone learned something new, and although the wind wasn’t on our side… Luckily it’s called Stoney Lake for a reason and we searched all over until we found some nice calm water!  Everyone had fun and learned something new!  Enjoy the photos, and watch for the video at the end of the summer! Shape Up Or Ship Out

       A WORKOUT IDEA FOR

GETTING IN SHAPE THIS SUMMER

Author: Kayle McMillen

Alright Ladies! It’s that time again, at least for us Canadians, to start riding again. But if you have some serious goals for this summer and really want to push yourself, you are going to have to get prepared. Particularly us girls in Canada only have a short wakeboard season, you don’t want to waste it getting back into shape.  You always realize how much strength and endurance it takes to wakeboard/wakeskate after the first session each season -and at least for me the few days after that recovering.

Ideally you are looking to increase your cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, core strength and balance. A good workout routine will increase all these aspects as well as contribute to injury prevention by practicing proper technique and increasing muscle and joint strength.

Some things wakeboarders should concentrate on is joint stability especially within the knee. Arm, back and shoulder strength is also important, as well as balance, flexibility and core stability. . . . . .so pretty much everything!

I have tried to make a overall workout routine using minimal equipment that you can find at home or get for a small price. These exercises can be used for a variety of levels by altering the sets, reps, weight/resistance. I have tried to include some basic exercises and hopefully some you haven’t heard of before. The workout is as hard as you want it to be and I have also added in some ways to increase the difficulty of some of the exercises. Don’t kill yourself the first time, the last thing I want is for anyone to get hurt. So try out the exercises and then start to add more weight/resistance and increasing the difficulty. Hopefully you will learn a few things about exercising from this article and a few new exercises. I have tried to suggest proper technique, which I can’t stress how important it is and how difficult it is to explain in an article, especially on some of the more complex exercises. (more…)
